“One question I see tossed around sometimes is how people could be happy in heaven knowing that their loved ones are suffering in hell. It may seem odd, but I never even thought of this problem as an evangelical. It wasn’t until later that I came upon it, already an atheist myself. Curious, I decided to look up how Christian apologists respond to this problem. I have to admit to being kind of horrified by the answers I’ve found.” (tags: heavenhellreligionsociopathchristianity)

I suppose the first possibility that springs to my mind is along the lines of: “The nature of the bliss you will experience in Heaven is more or less mindless, as if you were on some sort of euphoric drug and were too busy enjoying its effect to think much about anything”. I’m not sure that would necessarily sell Heaven as a thing to look forward to (unless you’re into that sort of thing, of course), but at least it would permit someone to be happy there without being actively callous and uncaring.
What answers did you find and from whom?
It’s a link blog, so it’s not actually me writing it, it’s linking to Love, Joy, Feminism, the blog of Libby Anne, who has had quite an interesting time.
I wonder what would constitute a good answer.

Following the convention of the article, I’ll call that “In Heaven, we’ll all be wireheading“. 🙂
I agree that it’s hardly a welcome prospect.
